The Major Oak in Sherwood Forest

Come and learn all about the archaeology and history of Sherwood Forest, and see for yourself some of the archaeological remains within the ancient landscape of Birklands and Bilhaugh, ancient woodlands which form the core of the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve (SFNNR).

The SFNNR is home to hundreds of ancient oak trees, which form a living connection to the medieval landscape of hunting and outlaws for which Sherwood Forest is famous around the world.

This 2 ½ hour guided walk takes in the most beautiful parts of the woodland and heathland of the nature reserve, visiting some of the best archaeological remains, while you learn all about the history of Sherwood Forest from expert archaeologist and tour guide Andy Gaunt.


Andy is an archaeologist and Director at Mercian Archaeological Services CIC. He has spent many years researching, digging, and surveying the landscape of Sherwood Forest.

At Mercian he runs the Sherwood Forest Archaeology Project, and is the leading expert on the archaeology of Sherwood Forest.

He has intimate and unrivalled knowledge of the archaeology of Sherwood Forest, and has been mapping and recording the archaeological remains within the ancient woodland as part of the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve Archaeology Survey.

This walking tour is a chance to undertake a voyage of discovery in the landscape of Robin Hood alongside the archaeologist at the fore-front of research in Sherwood Forest.

Andy is an experienced tour guide as well as an archaeological expert, and his passion for the Forest and unrivalled knowledge shines through on this walking tour.
